At higher levels of command that include Colonels, both commissioned and enlisted officers are eligible for being promoted to Colonel. Once they have been upgraded to Colonel, all commissioned officers can apply for general promotions. So, officers who have before been promoted as a General will be qualified for promotion to a Vice Captain or Major.
Additionally, the salary increases for Specialties increases every two years. You must be in the top 20 percent of your enlistment class to gain promotion to an specialized pay grade. The pay grades are Technician, Radio Technician Computer Networking Specialist and Information Technology Specialist. People who have any of these specialties pay grades are eligible to apply for the position of surgeon technician or Medical Assistant, after they’ve completed the required number in years served and reached the minimum level for promotion.
