An index of cost of employment establishes that U.S. military pay scale known as The Allowable Rate. The index is determined by analyzing the demands for enlisted personnel as well as permanent and temporary military retirees per 100 active duty personnel. When considering these aspects, the rate is adjusted so that it takes into account the strength requirements for each group for a stable workforce. This process is used to determine a basic military salary that is later applied in each branch.

It is the U.S army has a ranking process in place. The ranks are determined by the First Lieutenant and above and include officers like Sergeants, lieutenants, Colonels, and majors. Within the army, three levels are in order from highest to lowest at the bottom of the rank chain. They are known as the “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

The pay scale that is used in the army is called the First Major First Lieutenant, First Lieutenant and other ranks. The pay scale ranks individuals across different categories of service within the different wings of the army. For example, those who are lower-ranked in that section of the Marine Corps will be considered Officers Reserved or Officers Regular. The higher-ranked ones are classified as Specialists or Officers Special. Additionally, those who are in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits, while those in the Navy will be classified as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next step up the pay scale of the military is the ” Sergeant Major”. The topmost ladder is the ” Colonel”. As a Colonel, will be considered a General and be responsible for all military personnel and the entire staff. At this rank it is also possible to earn the most pay per day. As you progress, you will also receive the most number of days of paid annual vacation.

Pay increases at this rate are dependent on the cost index for employment. This is an attempt to keep track of the rate of inflation of the cost of living. If an area has one with a high cost index, the cost of living will be expected to be much higher than when the cost Index is not high. This will result in an increase of the salary of military personnel who have a high education and who have experienced similar promotions and increases similar to those at lower pay grades. Promotions in areas below their paygrade have no pay increase.

Officers who have both commissioning and enlisted receive an upgrade to Warrant Officer. The pay they receive as a Warrant Officer is based on their actual commission score, which is usually above the grade of their real star. Higher ranks of command including Colonel, both commissioned, and enlisted officers can be eligible for advancement to the rank of Colonel. After a promotion to Colonel, all officers who are commissioned will be eligible for general promotion. That means, those who’ve had a previous promotion to a General will be eligible to receive a promotion to Vice Captain or Major.

The pay increases for Specialties will increase  every two years. It is necessary to be in the top 20 percent of your class to get promoted to an specialized pay grade. The pay grades are Technician, Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist, as well as Information Technology Specialist. Those with any of these specialty paygrades could apply to be a surgical technician, or Medical Assistant, once they’ve completed the required number or years in service, and reached the minimum level for promotion.
