When you attain the rank of Colonel, it means that you are a general and will be in charge of the entire military and entire staff. As a Colonel you also get the most pay per day. At higher levels, you will also receive the most number of days of paid time off per calendar month.
Pay increments at this level are based on the military index of cost of employment. This is a method to account for the rising of living costs. When an area has one with a high cost index, the cost of living is likely to be more expensive than when the index is less. This can result in an increase in the salaries of military personnel who have high educational qualifications and had similar promotions and increases that are comparable to those in lower pay grades. Promotions in jobs that are not in their pay grade receive no increase.
Officers that are both in the enlisted and commissioned ranks receive an upgrade to Warrant Officer. The amount they are paid in this grade is determined by their actual commission rating which is usually greater than the actual star. When they reach higher levels of the command, such as Colonel, both enlisted and commissioned officers can be eligible for promotions to Colonel. Once they have been upgraded to Colonel, all officers commissioned are eligible for general promotions. Therefore, those who have previously been promoted to a General are eligible for promotions to Vice Captain or Major.
Also, the increments in pay for Specialties will increase in every couple of years. You must be in the top 20 percent of your class to qualify for the Specialized pay grade. These pay grades include Technician, Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist, as well as Information Technology Specialist. Those with any of these pay grade specializations could apply to be a surgical technician or Medical Assistant once they’ve reached the required number in years served and achieved the level of promotion required.
