The salary they earn at this rank is based on their actual commission rating which is usually greater than that of their real star. At higher levels of leadership including Colonel, both enlisted and commissioned officers are entitled to promotions to Colonel. Following an upgrade to Colonel, all officers commissioned are eligible for general promotion. So, officers who have previously been promoted to General will be eligible for promotions to a Vice Captain or a Major.
Additionally, the salary increases for Specialties go up twice a year. You must be in the top twenty percent of your class to qualify for an advanced pay grade. These pay grades include Technician, Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist as well as Information Technology Specialist.
