An index of cost of employment establishes an U.S. military pay scale called“Allowed” Rate. The index is determined by analyzing the need for enlisted personnel permanently, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees for 100 active-duty personnel. After taking into account these factors it is then adjusted so that it is based on the requirements for strength for each group in order to guarantee a sufficient workforce. This process is used to define a minimum military pay that is later applied in each branch.

It is the U.S army has its own ranking system in place. Its ranks are set at the level of the First Lieutenant and the upper levels and comprise officers such as Sergeants, lieutenants, Colonels and majors. Within the army, three levels are listed from the top to the lowest at the bottom of the rank chain. They are referred to as “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

The second pay scale used in the army is First Major First Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, and then on. This is a way of grading people across various specialties within the different wings of the army. For example, the lower-ranking individual’s  in The Marine Corps will be considered officers placed in reserve or Officers Regular. In contrast, upper-ranked individuals will be classified as Specialists or Officers Special. Also, those in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits and those in the Navy will be regarded as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

This leads to an increase in the salary of military personnel who are educated and have received similar promotions and increments that are similar to those in lower pay levels. People who are promoted to the lower ranks of their pay are not given a raise.

Officers who hold both a in the enlisted and commissioned ranks receive an upgrade to Warrant Officer. The salary they earn in this grade is determined by the actual rating of their commission and is typically above the grade of their real star. Higher ranks of command, such as Colonel, both enlisted and commissioned officers will be entitled to being promoted to Colonel. After an upgrade to Colonel, all officers who are commissioned will be eligible for general promotion. That means, those who’ve previously been promoted to General are eligible for promotions to a Vice Captain or Major.

Lastly, the pay increases for Specialties increases approximately every two years. You need to be among the top 20 percent of your enlistment class to be promoted to an advanced pay grade. The pay grades are Technician Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist, and Information Technology Specialist. The people who have any of these pay levels could apply to be a surgical technician, or Medical Assistant once they’ve reached the required number or years in service, and have completed the required level of promotion.
