An index of the cost of employment determines the U.S. military pay scale called the Allowable Rate. The index is found through examining the need for enlisted personnel permanently, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees for 100 active-duty soldiers. After considering these parameters, the rate is adjusted to give a percentage that considers the strength requirements for each group in order to guarantee a sufficient workforce. This technique is used to set a basic military pay that is later applied in every branch.

It is the U.S army has a ranking process in place. The ranks are established at the level of the First Lieutenant and above and include officers like sergeants, lieutenants (colonels), lieutenants and majors. Within the army, there are three levels listed from the top to the lowest in the chain of command. They are called the “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

The other pay scale used by the army is First Major First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, and others. This is a way of grading people across various sectors of service in different branches in the military. For example, the lower-ranking individual’s  in military units like the Marine Corps will be considered Officers in Reserve or Officers Regular. The higher-ranked ones are classified as Specialists or Officers Special. Also, those in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits, while those in the Navy will be classified as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next level up in the pay scale for military personnel is called the ” Sergeant Major”. At the top of this level is called the ” Colonel”. In the Colonel rank, you will be considered a General and will be in charge of all of the military and the entire staff. At this rank you also get the most amounts of money per day. At higher levels, you are entitled to a number of paid days of holiday per month.

Pay increments at this level are determined by the military employment cost index. This allows you to take into account the rise of the cost of living. When an area has an index that is high, then the costs of living are expected to be much higher than when the cost index is lower. This results in an increase in the salaries of military personnel who have high educational qualifications and received similar promotions and rises as those who are in lower paygrades. The ones who are promoted in jobs that are not in their pay grade receive no additional pay.

Officers that are both an enlisted and commissioned rank get promotions to Warrant Officer. The pay they receive in this grade is based on their commission rating that is typically higher than that of their real star. At higher levels of command such as Colonel both commissioned, and enlisted officers are entitled to advancement to the rank of Colonel. Once they have been upgraded to Colonel, all officers who are commissioned are eligible for general promotions. Thus, those who have earlier been promoted to General are qualified for promotion to a Vice Captain or Major.

Lastly, the pay increases for Specialties rise in every couple of years. You need to be in the top twenty percent of your enlistment class to gain promotion to the Specialized pay grade. The pay grades are Technician, Radio Technician Computer Networking Specialist, as well as Information Technology Specialist. Individuals who hold any of these specialty pay grades are eligible to apply for the position of surgical technician or Medical Assistant, after they’ve reached the required number in years served and reached the appropriate promotion level.
