An index of the cost of employment determines this U.S. military pay scale known as the Allowable Rate. The index is calculated by studying the demand for enlisted personnel permanently, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees for 100 active duty personnel. When considering these aspects then the rate is adjusted to give a percentage that will be based on the needs of each group to ensure an adequate workforce. This process is used to create a basic military wage which is then utilized in every branch.

The U.S army has its own ranking method in operation. Its ranks are set through the first lieutenant and higher and include officers like sergeants, lieutenants or Colonels, and majors. In the army, three levels are ranked from highest to lowest on the hierarchy of commands. They are referred to as the “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

Another pay scale utilized within the army are the First Major First Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, and further on. These pay scales rank people in various areas of work in the different branches of the army. For example, the lower-ranking individual’s  within that section of the Marine Corps will be considered Officers Placed In Reserve, or Officers Regular. For those who are higher-ranked, they are classified as Officers Special or Specialists. Additionally, those who are in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits, while those in the Navy will be classified as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next level in the military pay scale is the ” Sergeant Major”. At the top of this level is called the ” Colonel”. In the Colonel rank, you will rank as a General and will oversee all of the military and the entire staff. As a Colonel, you will also receive the highest amount of pay per day. In higher ranks, you will also receive an increased number of paid days of holidays per year.

This is a way to accommodate for the increase of costs of living. In areas with one with a high cost index, the cost of living will be expected to be greater than when the index is low. This results in an increase in the salary of military personnel who are highly educated and who have experienced similar promotions and increases similar to those at lower pay levels. The ones who are promoted in jobs that are not in their pay grade receive no increase.

Officers with in the enlisted and commissioned ranks receive an increase to the rank of Warrant Officer. The amount they are paid in this grade is based on their actual commission rating which is usually higher than the grade of their current star. In higher ranks of command including Colonel, both commissioned and enlisted officers are eligible for promotions to Colonel. After a promotion to Colonel, all commissioned officers are eligible for general promotions. That means, those who’ve before been promoted as a General will be qualified for promotion to a Vice Captain or Major.

Also, the increments in pay for Specialties will increase in every couple of years. It is necessary to be in the top twenty percent of your enlistment class to gain promotion to the Specialized pay grade. The pay grades are Technician, Radio Technician Computer Networking Specialist and Information Technology Specialist. If you have one of these pay levels are eligible to apply for the position of surgical technician or Medical Assistant after they’ve reached the minimum number or years in service, and reached the required promotion level.
