An index of the cost of employment determines how much the U.S. military pay scale known as the Allowable Rate. The index is calculated by looking at the demands for enlisted personnel as well as permanent and temporary military retirees per 100 active-duty soldiers. After analyzing these elements then the rate is adjusted to give a rate that considers the strength requirements of each of these groups to ensure that there is a sufficient number of workers. This process is used to set a basic military pay that is then applied to every branch.

It is the U.S army has its rank procedure in force. The ranks are determined by the First Lieutenant or above and comprise officers such as sergeants, lieutenants or Colonels, and majors. Within the army, three levels are classified from the highest to the lowest to the top of the line of command. They are referred to as “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

Another pay scale utilized within the army is the First Major, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, and the list goes on. These pay scales rank people in various categories of service within the different wings of the army. For example, those who are lower-ranked in The Marine Corps will be considered Officers Placed In Reserve or Officers Regular. For those who are higher-ranked, they will be classified as Specialists or Officers Special. Furthermore, those working in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits and those in the Navy will be classified as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next level up in the pay scale of the military is the ” Sergeant Major”. At the top of this step is known as the ” Colonel”. In the Colonel rank, you will be promoted to General and be responsible for all military personnel and the whole staff. In this position you’ll also earn the most pay per day. At higher levels, you will receive an increased number of paid days of holidays per year.

Pay increments at this level are dependent on the cost of living index. This is an attempt to account for the rising of living expenses. When an area is characterized by an index of high value, the cost of living will be expected to be more expensive than when the index falls. This can result in an increase in the amount of pay paid to military personnel who are highly educated and enjoyed similar promotions as well as pay increments that are similar to those in lower pay grades. Those who are promoted in the lower ranks of their pay have no pay increase.

Officers with commissioning and enlisted receive an upgrade to Warrant Officer. The amount they are paid in this grade is based on their actual commission ratings which is usually greater than the grade of their real star. When they reach higher levels of the command, such as Colonel, both commissioned and enlisted officers will be entitled to advancement to the rank of Colonel. When they are upgraded to Colonel, all officers commissioned can apply for general promotions. So, officers who have already been elevated to a General will be eligible for a promotion to a Vice Captain or Major.

The pay increases for Specialties increases  every two years. You must be in the top twenty percent of your class to gain promotion to the Specialized pay grade. These pay grades include Technician, Radio Technician Computer Networking Specialist and Information Technology Specialist. The people who have any of these specialty pay grades can apply to become a surgical technician, or Medical Assistant after they’ve completed the required number in years served and reached the required promotion level.
