Each branch has specific rules that define its pay grade. This includes bonuses as well as special pay considerations for seniority.

An index of cost of employment establishes this U.S. military pay scale called“Allowed” Rate. The index is calculated through examining the requirements for enlisted employees permanently, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees per 100 active-duty military personnel. After analyzing these elements then the rate is adjusted to give a rate that will be based on the needs for each group for a stable workforce. This method is used in order to determine a basic military salary that is then applied to each branch.

It is the U.S army has its rank process in place. The ranks are decided in the hands of the First Lieutenant and above and include officers like sergeants, lieutenants or Colonels, and majors. Within the army, three levels are ordered from the top to the bottom on the hierarchy of commands. They are referred to as the “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

The other pay scale that is utilized by the army is First Major First Lieutenant, First Lieutenant, and others. These pay scales rank people in various areas of service within the various branches of the army. For example, those who are lower-ranked in that section of the Marine Corps will be considered Officers in Reserve or Officers Regular. For those who are higher-ranked, they will be classified as Officers Special or Specialists. In addition, those employed in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruiters and those in the Navy will be classified as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next level up in the pay scale for military personnel is called the ” Sergeant Major”. At the top of this scale is the ” Colonel”. In the Colonel rank, you will be considered a General and be responsible for the entire military and entire staff. At this rank it is also possible to earn the most money per day. At higher levels, you will be able to enjoy the most number of paid days of annual vacation.

Pay increases at this level are dependent on the cost of labor index. This is a way to account for the rising of costs of living. When an area is characterized by a high index, the cost of living is likely to be higher than when the of living index is very low. This can result in an increase in the salary of military personnel who are educated and have received similar promotions and increments that are similar to those in lower pay levels. People who are promoted to the lower ranks of their pay get no raise.

Officers who hold both a commissioning and enlisted receive a promotion to a Warrant Officer. The pay they receive for this position is determined by their commission rating which is usually greater than the level of their actual star. Higher ranks of command including Colonel, both commissioned and enlisted officers can receive an upgrade to Colonel. Following an upgrade to Colonel, all officers who are commissioned are eligible for general promotion. Thus, those who have already been elevated to General will be qualified to be promoted to Vice Captain or a Major.

Lastly, the pay increases for Specialties will increase  every two years. You need to be in the top 20 percent of your enlistment class to gain promotion to a Specialized pay grade. These pay grades include Technician Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist, and Information Technology Specialist. People who have any of these pay grades may apply to become a surgeon technician or Medical Assistant, once they’ve reached the required number of years of service and reached the minimum level for promotion.
