An index of cost of employment establishes an U.S. military pay scale called The Allowable Rate. The index is calculated through examining the requirements for enlisted employees, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees per 100 active-duty military personnel. After considering these factors The rate is then adjusted to give a percentage that considers the strength requirements of each of these groups for a stable workforce. This process is used to define a minimum military pay which is then utilized in every branch.

The U.S army has its rank established system. Its ranks are formulated by the First Lieutenant and up and comprise officers such as sergeants, lieutenants or Colonels, and majors. Within the army, three levels are ordered from the top to the bottom through the order of the commander. The salary they earn in this grade is based on their actual commission ratings which is usually greater than the actual star. In higher ranks of command including Colonel, both commissioned and enlisted officers are eligible for the rank of Colonel. When they are upgraded to Colonel, all commissioned officers can be promoted to general. For example, those who’ve previously been promoted to General are eligible for a promotion to a Vice Captain or a Major.

The pay increases for Specialties will increase at least every 2 years. It is necessary to be in the top 20 percent of your class to qualify for the pay grade of Specialized. These pay grades include Technician Radio Technician Computer Networking Specialist and Information Technology Specialist. Individuals who hold any of these specialty paygrades can apply to become a surgeon technician or Medical Assistant once they’ve reached the required number in years served and have completed the required level of promotion.
