Pay increases at this level are dependent on the index of cost of employment. This is an attempt to adjust for the inflation in living expenses. Officers who have both commissioned and enlisted rank receive the opportunity to be promoted to Warrant Officer. The salary they earn at this rank is based on their actual commission ratings and is typically above that of their real star. Higher ranks of command including Colonel, both enlisted and commissioned officers will be eligible for the rank of Colonel. Following an upgrade to Colonel, all officers who are commissioned will be eligible for general promotion. So, officers who have had a previous promotion to a General are eligible for a promotion to a Vice Captain or Major.
Finally, the increases in pay for Specialties increase every two years. It is necessary to be in the top 20 percent of your class to gain promotion to an advanced pay grade. The pay grades are Technician Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist and Information Technology Specialist. Anyone with one of these pay grades are eligible to apply for the position of surgical technician or Medical Assistant, after they’ve reached the required number or years in service, and completed the required level of promotion.
