An index of cost of employment establishes how much the U.S. military pay scale called“Allowed” Rate. The index is calculated through examining the amount of enlisted members, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees per 100 active-duty soldiers. After considering these parameters then the rate is adjusted in order to produce a figure that considers the strength requirements of each group for a stable workforce. This method is employed to set a basic military pay that is then applied to every branch.

The U.S army has its own ranking procedure in force. Its ranks are formulated through the first lieutenant and the upper levels and include officers like Colonels, lieutenants, sergeants, and majors. In the army, three levels are classified from the highest to the lowest on the hierarchy of commands. They are referred to as “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

The other pay scale that is utilized within the army are the First Major First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, and then on. This is a way of grading people across various fields of service in the different branches of the army. For example, the lower-ranking individual’s  within that section of the Marine Corps will be considered Officers Placed In Reserve or Officers Regular. The higher-ranked ones will be classified as Specialists or Officers Special. In addition, those in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits. Likewise, those in the Navy will be designated as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next level up in the military pay scale is called the ” Sergeant Major”. The topmost level is called“Colonel” ” Colonel”. In the Colonel rank, you are a general and will have responsibility for your entire army and entire staff. As a Colonel you also get the most money per day. At higher levels, you will receive a number of days of paid leave per month.

Pay increases at this rate are determined by the military cost of living index. This is an attempt to accommodate for the increase of living costs. When an area is characterized by an index of high value, the cost of living is expected to be significantly higher than when the cost index falls. This will result in an increase of the pay for military members who have a high education and received similar promotions and raises like those in lower pay levels. Personnel who are promoted to jobs that are not in their pay grade are not given a raise.

Officers who are commissioned and enlisted rank receive promotions to Warrant Officer. The salary they earn as a Warrant Officer is based on their actual commission rating which is usually greater than that of their real star. Higher ranks of command such as Colonel both commissioned and enlisted officers will be entitled to the rank of Colonel. After a promotion to Colonel, all commissioned officers can apply for general promotions. Thus, those who have already been elevated to a General are eligible to receive a promotion to a Vice Captain or Major.

Lastly, the pay increases for Specialties increase  every two years. You need to be in the top 20 percent of your enlistment class to qualify for a Specialized pay grade. The pay grades are Technician, Radio Technician Computer Networking Specialist, and Information Technology Specialist. Anyone with one of these specialty pay grades may apply to become a Surgical Technician, or a Medical Assistant once they’ve reached the required number or years in service, and have reached the appropriate promotion level.
