Each branch has specific regulations that determine its pay scale. This includes bonuses and a special compensation for seniority.

An index of cost of employment establishes an U.S. military pay scale called“Allowable Rate. The index is determined by looking at the demands for enlisted personnel permanently, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees for 100 active-duty personnel. After considering these parameters and adjusting the rate in order to produce a figure that assumes the strength requirements of each of these groups to ensure an adequate workforce. This technique is used to determine a basic military salary that is later applied in every branch.

The U.S army has its rank process in place. Its ranks are set from the rank of First Lieutenant and higher and include officers like sergeants, lieutenants (colonels), lieutenants, and majors. Within the army, there are three levels placed from top to bottom at the bottom of the rank chain. They are referred to as “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

The second pay scale used by the army is First Major, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant and so on. It ranks individuals in various specialties within the various wings that comprise the Army. For example, the lower-ranking individual’s  within the Marine Corps will be considered Officers placed in Reserve or Officers Regular. However, higher-ranking individuals will be classified as Officers Special or Specialists. Also, those in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits, while those who are in the Navy will be designated as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next step in the military pay scale is called the ” Sergeant Major”. At the top of this scale is the ” Colonel”. When you reach the rank of Colonel, you are a general and will be accountable for all of the military and the whole staff. In this position, you will also receive the most money per day. In higher ranks, you will receive an increased number of paid days of leave per month.

Pay increments at this level are based on the military cost of employment. This is an attempt to account for the rising of the cost of living. If an area has high cost index, the cost of living is expected to be more expensive than when the Index is not high. This results in an increase in the salary of military personnel with a higher education level and who have experienced similar promotions and raises like those in lower pay levels. The ones who are promoted in the lower ranks of their pay get no raise.

Officers who have both employed and enlisted are given the opportunity to be promoted to Warrant Officer. The amount they are paid for this position is determined by their actual commission rating and is typically above the grade of their real star. In higher ranks of command such as Colonel both commissioned, and enlisted officers can be eligible for advancement to the rank of Colonel. After an upgrade to a Colonel, all officers commissioned are eligible for general promotion. This means that those who’ve had a previous promotion to General are eligible for promotions to a Vice Captain or Major.

Lastly, the pay increases for Specialties go up  every two years. You need to be in the top 20 percent of your enlistment class to gain promotion to an advanced pay grade. The pay grades are Technician, Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist, and Information Technology Specialist. People who have any of these pay grades could apply to be a surgeon technician or Medical Assistant once they’ve reached the minimum number to years working and completed the required level of promotion.
