U.S. military pay scales are used as the main gauge for determining the amount of compensation. Army, Navy, Air Force as well as Marine Corps are the branches that utilize the scale of pay used by military personnel. An index of cost of employment establishes the U.S. military pay scale known as“Allowable Rate. The index is found by analyzing the need for enlisted personnel, permanent personnel, and temporary military retirees per 100 active-duty soldiers. After analyzing these variables then the rate is adjusted to give a percentage that considers the strength requirements of each group to ensure a sufficient workforce. This method is employed to set a basic military pay that is later applied in every branch.

It is the U.S army has a ranking structure in place. Its ranks are established through the first lieutenant or above and include officers like sergeants, lieutenants or Colonels and majors. In the army, there are three levels ranked from highest to lowest in the chain of command. They are known as the “major”, “first lieutenant,” and “second lieutenant”.

The other pay scale used by the army is the First Major, First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, and then on. This ranks people in different categories of service within the various branches in the military. For example, the lower-ranking individual’s  within The Marine Corps will be considered Officers Placed In Reserve or Officers Regular. However, higher-ranking individuals will be classified as Specialists or Officers Special. Furthermore, those working in the Air Force will be considered Officers Air Recruits, and those in the Navy are classified as Officers Navy or Officers Waterman.

The next level in the pay scale of the military is the ” Sergeant Major”. At the top of this level is called the ” Colonel”. At Colonel rank, you will be promoted to General and will be in charge of the entire military and the entire staff. As a Colonel, you will also receive the highest amount of pay per day. At higher levels, you will receive a number of paid days of time off per calendar month.

Pay rises at this point are determined by the military cost of living index. This is an attempt to accommodate for the increase in living expenses. When a region has an index of high value, the cost of living is expected to be much higher than when the index is lower. This will result in an increase of the salary of military personnel who are educated and have were promoted and received pay increments that are similar to those in lower pay grades. People who are promoted to areas below their paygrade receive no additional pay.

Officers with commissioning and enlisted receive a promotion to a Warrant Officer. The salary they earn with this title is determined by their actual commission rating that is generally higher than the grade of their real star. In higher ranks of command like Colonel both commissioned and enlisted officers will be eligible for the rank of Colonel. When they are upgraded to Colonel, all officers commissioned are eligible for general promotion. Therefore, those who have prior to that been upgraded to a General are eligible for a promotion to Vice Captain or a Major.

Also, the increments in pay for Specialties rise in every couple of years. You must be among the top 20 percent of your enlistment class to gain promotion to a Specialized pay grade. The pay grades are Technician Radio Technician, Computer Networking Specialist and Information Technology Specialist. If you have one of these specialties pay grades can apply to become Surgical Technician, or a Medical Assistant once they’ve completed the required number of years of service and have reached the required promotion level.
